Aussie Reps Canada

Yesterday I was out at a Music Festival in Australia while the Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies were happening, so I recorded it and watched it back upon my return. When I arrived home and turned on my computer I read all the Twitter updates from my fellow Canadians about how embarrassed people were about the stupid torch thing. I mean really? Canadians, I love you… but sometimes you complain too much.

This morning I watched Australian David Atkins who was the producer of the opening ceremonies being interviewed on Channel 9 here in Aussie. It was a really interesting interview as he talked about everything from the special effects to what it was like to work with Canadians, “They are very similar to us Aussie’s, but just slightly more serious”.

When asked about the 4th pole technical problem, apparently he knew about the problem long before the torch was being raised into place. Engineers under the stage were quickly trying to reprogram the computers so that it could still operate with three. They had after all run this routine about 40 times in rehearsals.

Four poles or not, I thought the ceremonies were absolutely brilliant and they truly made me proud to be a Canadian watching the broadcast from Australia. The projections, the audience participation, all of it truly captured a nation full of culture and life. I think David and his team at DAE Australia did an incredible job making it all happen.
